Sorry, it is not clear to me, do you need the handle or the cable?
Is that the cable you need in the picture from Cecil's?

Do you have a picture of the broken piece? A picture would really help.
Is the broken piece part of the cable, and is it serviced with the cable?
I have been looking at some different angels of the unit, and the photos look like the cable is all metal. Is it broken where the cable attaches to the plastic handle?

The cable looks like it is adjustable.
Maybe you can find some type of end that you can crimp on, or one with a set screw.

Did some deeper checking, I think that all that is left is to check with boat salvage yards, find a company that will make you a cable, or is to repair yours, your girl is 14 yrs old, they don't even stock new parts for cars that old .There are companies out there that buy up new old stock. If you could get a part number, and run it on the net, that might help you locate one. Good luck, keep us posted, it may help someone else.

I love to tinker, I have more time than money, so my first choice is to repair it, if possible.

Judging from what I see in the photo, it looks like an easy fix, good luck.
