2023 Trip Report: Pictured Rocks, Lake Superior and Washington Island, Lake Michigan

The first stop on the aforementioned trip was Pictured Rocks on the Southern Shore of Lake Superior. We stayed and boated out of Munising Municipal Marina and it was spectacular. The water was incredible and rivaled home (Southeast Florida) in terms of clarity. A bit cold though: the transducer measured about 67 degrees for most of the trip at Lake Superior.

On Day 1 we did a nice little cruise after launching along the coast and that stopped over in Miner's Bay for a snack:

On Day 2, the soon-to-be in-laws stopped over and we took them to a secluded beach accessible via Trout Bay in the center of Grand Island. Afterwards, we did dinner onshore and socialized with some very nice, fellow cruisers back at the marina until midnight. You meet a lot of great folks from all over spending time cruising and staying at marinas! It is one of the best parts IMO.

Anchored at Grand Island:

Day 3 was the day we finally got to cruise the length of the Pictured Rocks, taking in some of the waterfalls along the way and anchoring at Spray Falls for a freezing swim (forgot my wetsuit, ahh) and a nice, relaxing hour or so. Throughout the trip, I was blown away by the water quality of the Great Lakes. It is just a wonderful place to boat in the summer.

After a nice afternoon, we hauled out and headed back towards Rapid River, MI, where we were staying. As with anything boating, the bliss cannot last forever and a brake locked up on the way home (only 1 hour) and we had a bearing failure. I fixed it with a new hub and prevented it from happening again by removing the brake plunger for the rest of the trip and trip home.

After repairing the trailer, we launched the boat on the Little Bay De Noc again (it had been launched and kept on a mooring prior to the Pictured Rocks trip, but was removed when a massive storm with forecasted 70-75 MPH wind gusts moved through) and headed across Green Bay to Washington Island--a wonderful destination and one of the neatest places I've ever been to via boat.

We got a late start because of the trailer and various ongoing boat projects (I won't stop until this boat is basically brand new, so never I guess). The run across Green Bay was A SLOG...out in the "bay," we saw a consistent 3-5' following sea with 6' and 7' waves sprinkled in. There was probably an occasional 8' as well. The boat did well as always and never stuffed past the rub rail. Of course I was constantly working the wheel, throttle, and tabs...talk about a workout, but we maintained a steady 22-25 MPH.

We got to Washington Island late at dusk, after the restaurant at the marina had closed down the kitchen, but someone was nice enough to give us a ride into town and back. We ate at a local dive bar and the locals were "colorful" to say the least. The next day we borrowed a truck at the marina and explored town, stopping at Red Cup Coffee, a bookstore next door, and a wonderful replica Nordic Church. After eating lunch at a local outdoor burger joint that advertised: "We are not fast, we are good. If you want fast, go to Chicago.", we headed around the island to dive a shipwreck, but the water was too murky. We then hopped over to the other side of the nearby Rock Island for a swim. In contrast to the day prior, the Lake was flat calm and simply serene. It is so odd that two diametrically opposed days can be juxtaposed next to one another like these two days were. I think the reason for the change was the reversal in the wind direction, which nullified the fetch.

Red Cup Coffee...NO WIFI!

The builder's toolbelt. Apparently he hung them up here and then died one evening and never finished the church and they've been hanging there ever since as a testament to his work. Amazing really.

Shipyard Marina...Highly recommend! The only functioning marina on the island and its a good one with good people. For example, their gas pump was down and so they allowed us to borrow a work truck again and gave us Jerry cans to get pump gas! How many marinas would do that in more "civilized" places?!

After swimming at Rock Island we headed back to Gladstone to retrieve the boat and pack up and head home. Washington Island ended up being the crown jewel of the trip and I can't wait to go back!

It will take some time getting through all of this, but I am so looking forward to it, it will bring back some fond memories of my time up there.
The water is as I remember it, crystal clear, and blue. Thanks:)

We ran out of time , so we missed Pictured rock, but it is on my bucket list. I believe that there Indian carvings there.

Finally got to see your adventure. What a memorable trip you guys had, thank you so much for sharing it with us. The Lake Superior area is by far the most diverse of all the Great Lakes. The Canadian side is so untouched, and is truly God's country. The only way to experience what it is all about is, to trailer and launch to different areas. Your experience with your trailer is why I spend 4 Hrs. every season's end removing my brake drums inspecting everything, washing the bearings and hand packing them and new seals. Fill the cavity full and never add grease throughout the season. (same bearings, spindles, and drums) Time well spent for over 30 years.

Thanks, The great Lakes are my sanctuary.
Don't wait, do it before you tow again. You have a heavy package back there, and you will not be able to make an emergency stop.

I won't wait too long, but I did make it 1,000 miles without brakes this time. The Durango is a much, underrated tow vehicle. It's better than most all SUVs, all small trucks, and on par with a lot of 1/2 ton trucks. Even with RWD, I've never had any issues retrieving or stopping.

Just remember to leave a lot of room between you and what's in front of you, remember the trailer is not helping you, the boat is pushing you when you apply the brakes. Good luck, be safe out there.
Believe me, I know crazy. My girl's 1st tow vehicle was a1985 Buick Rivera, then 1994 Chevy S-10 Blazer. Now I tow with a 2012 GMC Acadia, rated at 5,000lbs, my package is a little over 6,000lbs, the Acadia around 4,700lbs. What helps is that it has the same braking system as the Yukon. When braking at slower speeds I can feel the trailer pulling back helping the stop. And I never tow over 55mph. I have made a couple power stops, but my ABS never kicked in.

Wow those are some interesting tow rigs! Would love to see some pics!

Thankfully, the Durango is rated for 7400 lbs. I find it to be well-matched for this size boat. I think the MPG of 14-15 towing speaks for itself as well.

What helps me to make it work is I am on flat land here, unless I have to go over a bridge. I take off slow kind of like a freight train. I'm in no hurry to get where I am going, If I had already wanted to be there, I would have left earlier. I am kind of the tail wagging the dog, so I go slow and leave a lot of escape room, if needs be.
MPG's are around 12.5 Forgot had a 1998 Grand Cherokee, No photo of the Chevy S-10 Blazer, but this is what it looked like same color.
