    Engine slowing at high throttle

found a cool video on Youtube about checking the fuel pressure. Ordered the gauge. The video also showed pulling the fuel regulator and cleaning it's screen. I did this and it was really dirty. Seems to run ok, but haven't given it the full test with the kids yet. Fingers crossed.

    Engine slowing at high throttle

Been out wakeboarding and tubing many times this season. Yesterday evening was the first time anything weird happened. While dragging the kids on the tube, I am constantly working the engine from 2500-4000RPM. At one point, the engine just started to slow down. I brought it back to neutral...

Learning 101: What is an IAC valve and what does it do when it fails?

Finally a follow up. Works like a charm. Had it out about 15 times so far this season. I will say, the motor still dips down in idle as soon as I get in neutral after slowing down, but it doesn't stall like it used to.

    Engine compartment insulation

Sorry, I do not know. I suspect an open foam insulation might provide better insulation than what I used. I'd look for that. Our engine compartment doesn't get that hot so heat shielding (the shiny stuff) is probably not necessary, IMO.

    Engine compartment insulation

I've only had it out one time, but no, it's about the same. If anything, I think it might be louder. I'm guessing the open foam that was there was better able to 'catch' the sound waves?

Thanks @Denny I'll put them back on and try changing the setting. I believe I have 5 settings and only tried one or two of them.

Good question. I followed the instructions and tried to align them perfectly with the bottom edge of the stern. See attached. Look at the bottom edge of the attached with file with_tabs3.JPG and you'll see they kick up some water and make the wake a little choppier, in my opinion. See...

Thanks @Denny . I actually installed some 'automatic' (compression spring activated) trim tabs that do settle the bow down a bit. Unfortunately, they also create a bunch of turbulence in the wake, which I really don't want. I took them off but the mounting hardware is still there. Now that...

Just trying to stir up some conversation... Our 20' Chaparral came with a 15x16 and a 14.5x18 backup in the engine compartment (both 4 blade). I was surprised the top speed as configured was a little slow at around 40mph. Did a little googling and it appears that smaller pitch and bigger...

    Perfect Pass

Got it out this weekend, and it worked like a champ! It actually surprised me that by default it was "ON". I hadn't run the boat in 6 weeks so I eased into it. Upon dropping the throttle a bit away from the launch, the boat quickly got up to speed, Perfect pass 'beeped' and started easing off...

Learning 101: What is an IAC valve and what does it do when it fails?

Thanks for the warning. Well, at a minimum, the $35 is probably the cheapest one can ever pay for a quick diagnosis. If it resolves my issue of stall coming off throttle, then I know that part was root cause. If not, look elsewhere. But I will think twice about leaving it in if it does...

    Outdrive painting

Anyone repaint their outdrives? I used to have an outboard, which I sanded, primered and painted. It looked ok and lasted fine for a few years. I am hoping to do my Volvo SX outdrive, but I was skimming the manual and noticed a section on painting! It says you must apply chromate conversion...

    Perfect Pass

Good news, all done with the install. Took two weeks to squeeze in with the "honey-do" list of other stuff. Bad news. Weather was crummy today so I didn't get to take it out to test!

Learning 101: What is an IAC valve and what does it do when it fails?

I would say it also depends on the ease of replacement at sea. I got the $35 IAC valve and will try it, but I will most certainly keep the old one in the toolbox. I would not do the same 'gamble' with something like a raw water impeller. Though I would trust a known aftermarket brand like Sierra.

Learning 101: What is an IAC valve and what does it do when it fails?

Decided to do a little research... I'm fairly confident I found the Volvo Penta part for my 5.0 GXi and it's about $280. I also found a Sierra equivalent for $70. Then I found a no-name brand on Amazon for $35! Crazy. I'll gamble for $35
