I read a book about this. I can't remember but I think someone from the crew wrote it. Absolutely mind boggling the determination to survive in the conditions they faced every day.

If you liked that book, let me tell you about another:
"Hell On Ice" by Commander Edward Ellsberg Copy write 1938

A very simple summary:

It is basically an exploration in the Arctic Ocean and got trapped in ice. They had to abandoned ship, walk the ice and ended up in northern Soviet Union. A historical marker [tomb] is placed in the area where some of the crew died.

This book is also a great read.
