New Transom needed

I have a 2005 boat with only 257 hours on it. I bought it when it had 196 hours. A Sunsation 288 Mid Cabin Open Bow powered with a Mercrusier 496 mag.

It spend the first half of it's life on a rack at a marina. Then 2nd owner used it at the finger lakes in upstate NY.

I've had it since last April.

I had it in for a leak in the exhaust captians call straight pipe.

They have advised that my bellows and gimble are close to needing replaced.

Plus some water is getting into boat around the transom. Possible wood rot, won't know till they tear into it.

So they patched me up and advised I bring it back in the fall for a whole new transom which would include bellows gimbe etc etc and come out to about the same cost as just replacing the individual parts.

I'm good to go for the next month or so but wondering how a boat with such low hours can need this already.

Repair shop said manufactorers suggest replacing transom every 15 years.

I've had 25 year old boats and never replaced a transom before.

Anyone have experience with this type of repair?

My girl is a 1985 with over 1900hrs, and her transom is rock solid.
I think what you are experiencing now, is because of something that started a long time ago.

I'm impressed with this shop. The guys are good. I did not have a survey when I bought. My mistake. All looked so good. Duh.
